Gateshead Voluntary Organisations Council
is an umbrella organisation, that aims to support, promote and develop
the local voluntary and community sector in Gateshead.
Any group can apply for membership, which is free, as long as they are
active or based in Gateshead. Currently there are over 400 members. GVOC
assists organisations in the following ways:
Services
and support
GVOC offers a range of services such as meeting rooms, photocopier and
printing machines, a community accountancy project, training courses designed
for the sector, regular newsletters, advice on funding and setting up
groups and a payroll service. Some of these services may have a charge.
Development
work
Over the years, the local voluntary and community sector has pioneered
some of the essential public services that we now take for granted. Child
protection and care for the elderly for example had their origins in,
and were developed by the voluntary sector.
This tradition continues today and GVOC helps to identify gaps in service
provision and work with groups to develop new and innovative services
to meet those needs.

Strategic
partnerships
GVOC works in partnership with local government and other statutory agencies
to shape the delivery of local services.
GVOC plays a key role in empowering local people and groups to take part
in partnerships that are directly involved in a wide range of regeneration,
neighbourhood renewal, health and social care, learning and other government
initiatives. Strategic partnerships may be regional, borough wide or at
neighbourhood level.
